Are you attached to your thoughts?
My mind is unruly.
This is the conclusion I’ve come to after observing it for some time now.
Thoughts seem to come and go…without any care or concern for how I feel about them.
They seem to have a mind of their own.
They do not adhere to my methods and tactics of control and manipulation.
They seem to operate by their own rules.
After quite A LOT of struggle and suffering, I’ve concluded that it’s best to just let them be.
There seems to be no point in fighting with them because they always seem to get their way…whether I like it or not.
So…I quit fighting with them (for the most part) and just watch them now.
They don’t seem to bother me as much these days.
It appears as though as soon as they are allowed to be, they lose their power over me.
Yes, I still get hooked....
But, I have a different way of dealing with them these days.
Instead of trying to suppress them or force them out, I get curious…
Really curious.
I start asking myself A LOT of questions...
"Is it true?
Is the way I’m seeing things an accurate reflection of reality?
Where am I not seeing clearly in this situation?
What am I believing that is keeping me stuck?
Who would I be without this thought?"
These are just a few of the questions I find myself asking.
These questions help to break loose the attachment I have to the thought.
Which seems to be the cause of the problem.
It’s not the thought that seems to be the issue, but my attachment to the thought that creates suffering.
Left uninvestigated, these attachments often keep me stuck… confined… limited…. imprisoned… suffering…
You get the point. Not much fun.
But…
Awareness and inquiry seem to hold the key...for me.
The key that allows me to break free of the prison created by my attachment to thought.
How about for you? How do you work with your thoughts? Have you found an effective way to work with them so they don’t keep you stuck?
I sure hope so!
