Dreaming

“What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” – Robert Shuller

Go around the room and introduce yourself, sharing your first name and a dream you have. Make it short, a sentence or short statement will do.

These were the instructions for the introduction activity on the first day of my coach training.

It had been a long time since I had been asked about my dreams.

At some point along the way, I got the message that it wasn’t ok to dream. I had to be practical and logical. There was no time for dreaming.

Why is it that we are asked as a child what we want to be when we grow up and then at some point given the message that dreaming isn’t allowed and we have to be practical?

You can’t do that, that’s not possible, you’re crazy, you’re living in the clouds, you’re not being practical, there’s no way you can make that happen, that’s not realistic.

And on and on it goes.

Pretty soon, we believe it’s not possible. Our curiosity starts to dwindle. We stop dreaming and only allow ourselves to think “inside the box”. We focus on all the reasons that it can’t happen, instead of all the reason it can.

I’m not saying that weighing the pros and cons and evaluating risk isn’t important or needed. It has a place for sure.

What I’m challenging you to consider is, why is it that we don’t dream anymore? And even more importantly, if we are fortunate enough to still dream, why is it that we don’t pursue our dreams?

Walt Disney said, “All of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Do you believe this is true?

I do.

In fact, I'm operating from this belief today. I’m dreaming big dreams and pursuing them with lots of courage. I feel like a child again. It feels like the world is my oyster and anything is possible.

How about you?

Do you dream? What do you dream? What would you attempt to do if it wasn’t impossible? What would you start doing today if you believed you could not fail?

I encourage you to dream big. Let your imagination go. Seek to see what’s possible instead of what’s impossible.

As Audrey Hepburn would say, “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m possible!”

You are possible.
