Doing the Dirty Work
My husband and I recently put our house on the market to sell.
In preparation to sell our home, we completed various home improvement projects.
[Disclaimer: We did not actually complete the home improvement projects ourselves… we asked for help and hired paid professionals to do most of the work!]
When all the projects were finished, we asked each other…
“Why didn’t we do these things earlier so that we could enjoy them while living in the home?”
Why did we wait to make these improvements right before we were going to move out?
It made me think of life.
Why is it that many of us wait for a significant life event (illness, end of a relationship, becoming empty nesters, retirement, dying, etc.) to…
Do the things we really want to do with our life,
Pursue our dreams,
Discover who we really are,
AND
Find out what really matters to us.
Why is it that so many of us wait for some significant life to do the dirty work?
Which often includes asking ourselves the tough questions, having the difficult conversations, and taking that journey within.
Why is pain so often the driving factor?
I’m not sure about you, but pain has been a huge motivator for me in my willingness to do the dirty work.
What I’ve learned through my own life experiences (as well as through the process of selling our home) is that it doesn’t have to be this way.
I can do the dirty work BEFORE life leaves me with no other (appealing) option.
Yes… it takes willingness and some effort.
And usually involves asking for help?.
But… the rewards are well worth it!
Doing the dirty work allows me to enjoy the life I’m working so hard to create.
How about you?
Are you putting certain things off that you know you need to do and telling yourself that you’ll do it later? Would doing those certain things improve your quality of life today?
If so, what are you waiting for?
If you would like support doing the dirty work, I’d love to see if I can help you out. In doing my own dirty work, I have discovered that part of my life’s purpose is helping others to discover theirs!

P.S. The updates we did to our house proved to be worth the investment. We got an offer within 5 days of putting it on the market! It pays to do the dirty work!!
