Getting Lost
I grew up in West Virginia, about 5 miles from a State Forest. In high school, I would often go mountain biking in this Forest with friends.
I remember one time in particular that I decided to go alone. I felt I knew the trails well and could navigate on my own.
I was wrong. I must have taken a wrong turn at some point. Needless to say, I got lost.
I remember being in a state of panic when I realized I was out in the middle of the Forest by myself without a cell phone or any site of a human being. It was terrifying.
Several hours later and exhausted, I finally found my way back to my car. I remember the gratitude I felt for having arrived safely.
Today, I find myself as a guide for people on their own journey "in the woods".
The journey represents the path to more meaning and fulfillment and the woods represent the various obstacles and roadblocks in life.
Like me, some have taken a wrong turn and have found themselves disconnected with what's important to them and their purpose. Others want to ensure they don't take a wrong turn as they venture in a new direction.
In either case, my job is the same. It's about connecting people to their values and purpose and supporting them in aligning their life with these things.
Our values and purpose serve as a compass to make sure we are heading in the right direction.
Without a strong connection to these things, it's easy to get distracted and miss a turn. Or, find yourself up against a roadblock unsure of the best detour. Or, fail to see a blind spot and find yourself in a messy situation.
There are so many ways we can find ourselves lost and turned around.
Can you relate?
Are you headed in a direction that aligns with your values and life purpose, or are you lost having somehow missed a turn?
I've learned from my own experience that it can be incredibly valuable having a guide to help me navigate my way. In fact, these days, I don't leave home without one.
